A new September 2025 firmware update for both the Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch is now live. While not the largest patch, the Nintendo Switch 2 update aims to improve overall stability, as the developers aim to continue improving the overall player experience on both of its hybrid consoles.
Following its highly anticipated release in June, sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 have continued to soar, with over 2 million units shipped in the US alone to date. The hardware wasn't without controversy ahead of its launch, with some members of the community frustrated by its high price and use of Game-Key Cards, with the latter prompting concerns surrounding game preservation. Additionally, the Switch 2 launched with very few first-party titles, though this doesn't seem to have impacted its popularity. Now, the developers have rolled out another firmware update for the Switch 2, with the original console also seeing a few improvements.
The Version 20.4.0 update for the Switch 2 aims to improve "general system stability to enhance the user experience." This also carries over to the original Switch, with dataminer OatmealDome revealing that the new patch updated the controller-handling code and the web browser. Any additional fixes or improvements are unclear, though some users hope that some backward compatibility fixes for the Switch 2 are on the way. Previously, the July 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 system update also made some general stability improvements, while also addressing an issue impacting the Parental Control settings on the console.
Fans are eager to hear more about what's next for the Nintendo Switch 2, and they may not have to wait long to learn more. Rumors of a September 2025 Nintendo Direct have been swirling in recent weeks, with longtime leaker NateTheHate supporting the theory. According to him, the event will likely take place during the second week of the month, sometime between September 8 and 14. While it's unclear what this rumored Direct will focus on, many in the community are hoping to finally find out Metroid Prime 4: Beyond's release date.
Fans of the new hybrid console have plenty to look forward to this year. Hollow Knight: Silksong will finally be released on September 4, with the month also seeing the release of Star Wars Outlaws, Cronos: The New Dawn, and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on the Switch 2. In October, Borderlands 4 will hit the scene, along with the highly anticipated Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
